JACOB JOHNSON

Updated February 2, 2008

Jacob Johnson was born December 11, 1787 in New Jersey. In the Rush County library the information about Jacob Johnson suggests that he was born in 1810. He married Ann Shields, daughter of William and Mary Shields, on Oct. 2, 1816 in Byrd Township, Brown County, Ohio. She was born in Sep. 17, 1793 in Pennsylvania. There were eight children born to this union. Research has suggested that the Johnson family (sometimes misspelled Johnston) and the Shields family lived in close proximity to one another in Brown County, Ohio. Before 1830, the couple was living in Brown County, Ohio. After 1830, the family was living in Centre Township, Rush County, Indiana. Jacob was a farmer. All but two children were born in Ohio. A land record in Indiana is found for Jacob Johnson from Brown County, Ohio. It appears that Jacob Johnson lived the rest of his life in Rush County, Indiana. The family is found in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Centre Township, Rush County. Jacob died May 2, 1855 in Rush County, Indiana. Ann died May 30, 1869 according to the cemetery information in the Rush County library. They are buried in Little Blue River Cemetery, located in Rush County. A letter from Jacob's great-grandson, Glen Roy Johnson, states that Jacob was one of six brothers who came from Pennsylvania though research and facts are still being compiled in order to determine if the other Johnson's found in Brown County, Ohio living close to Jacob were his brothers, other relatives, or not.
