Master of Pain Angel on the Sand All poetry on this page copyright © 2003 Wendy Littrell
I saw you once on the
Well-worn stage
Mascared eyes
Filled with rage
Words of horror
Master of pain
My head was spinning
I went insane
The lyrics called to me
Told me what to do
Now I’m locked away
All alone with you
Shadows creeping closer
There’s blood dripping down the wall
Death is outside stalking us
I can hear him call
Take me to your bed
Take me in the night
Use me like you want
Be my master of fright.
I wake up screaming
Bathed in a sheen of sweat
Wishing it was a lie
That we had never met
Your eyes follow me
Wherever I may go
Your laugh is in my ears
Telling me that it was so
I beg you please
Let the nightmare end
Then I feel your pull
I come to you again
I’m your pawn
I’m your slave
I lack the courage to do what is right
Don’t know how to be brave
You make me do things
That my mind can’t sort out
I’m on my knees for you
Yet my mind wants to shout
Loose me from these bonds
Free me from my chains
Before my life is over
Washed down the sewer drain
Inspired by A.C.
An angel called to me one day
I found her kneeling on the sand
Friendships were formed
Until I touched her hand
Can’t she see what she does to me?
Each time she smiles or laughs?
Can’t she feel my heart breaking?
It’s a knife in my heart that stabs.
I wanna be her savior
I wanna be her man
I wanna be her lover
But I just don’t think I can.
She called to me one lonely night
In the darkness I felt her desperation
More than friends, soon to be lovers
That was our consummation
Can’t she see what she does to me?
Each time she looks my way.
Can’t she feel my heart breaking?
There’s nothing more to say.
I wanna be her savior
I wanna be her man
I wanna be her lover
But I just don’t think I can.
For over half a lifetime
I’ve loved and lusted in vain
How can I ever live without her?
I’ve never known such pain.
I can’t let her know what she does to me
Each time she touches my face
I can’t let her see my heart breaking
Each time she leaves my place
I wanna be her savior
I wanna be her man
I wanna be her lover
But I just don’t think I can.
I messed up again
Back in ’81
Let her get to me
Felt like a loaded gun.
I can’t ever be her savior
I can’t ever be her man
I can’t ever be her lover
I know I never can.
Deepest than the deepest ocean
Wider than the widest sea
My love for her will always
Stand back in the shadows of me.
Song sung by a character in my novel (inspired by A.C.)
The Other
As you reach out to touch her
     (I reach to touch you)
You think about the one
     (Where’s the one)
You’ve only loved in your dreams
     (I’ve loved in my dreams)
And you whisper an apology to her
(I’m sorry this is how it is)
Though you’ve given your heart to her
     (You have my heart)
There’s a piece that will never belong
     (It’s a piece you won’t have)
For it holds the love for the one so far away
(I do love her, where is she)
And when she gazes into your eyes
(When I gaze into your eyes)
You hope she doesn’t see
     (Don’t look too deep)
The love that you have for the other
     (I have to find her)
As your mind drifts off in slumber
     (I’m afraid to dream)
Images of the other take hold
(She is here with me in dreams)
And in the deepest of the night, you love her
     (I will love you forever)
Body, mind and soul
     (With everything I possess)
And when daylight comes once more
     (I don’t want to wake)
She’ll only exist in your memory
     (I have to find her)
Waiting and dreaming of you
(Do you dream of me? I have to find her)

Searching
Love knows no boundaries
Through time and space beyond
In conscious thought or slumber
A thousand tears have fallen
In desperation and frustration
Searching the world for her
Each moment the spotlight hits
Wondering if she’s there
Never feeling that eternal connection
Or the chemistry that should be there
Waiting until the depression sets in
Again.
Masking it with smiles and nods
A laugh and an embrace
Inside is a hollowness
That feels as if it won’t ever abate.
Once more on the road
Looking, watching with cynical eyes
Feeling as if the emptiness is bottomless
Praying for that one spark
That one moment her eyes shine through it all
And make the dreams of yesterday
The truths of tomorrow.
