Poem
Written for the Ledger
With a slow shambling gait and a grave quit mien.
With his old fashioned coat slightly worn at the seam.
With his broad dunkard hat, with its dust covered crown.
Well, that's Doctor Stern as he goes about town.
For years has he trudged through the streets with his wares.
Through rain and snow and the cold frosty airs.
Selling here, chatting there with a friend he has found -
Well, that's Doctor Stern as he goes about town.
Never changing his route, never changing his coat.
Never changing the look of content that we note.
Just steadfast and plodding the whole year around.
Just plain Doctor Stern as he goes about town.
In his satchel he carries a balm for all ills.
"Tonics", "Rose Jelly Cream" and small boxes of pills.
And their worth he will tell you when tried will be found.
Will this same Doctor Stern as he goes about town.
All alone he resides in a wee tiny house.
With window and door facing out to the south.
When days work is done here he sits himself down.
Just the same Doctor Stern that we see about town.
Let all who may, learn from his plain frugal ways.
To lay by a store for the dark rainy days.
For a lesson he teaches with methods quite sound.
Goes this same Doctor Stern as he goes about town.
Some day this old landmark, familiar for years.
Will pass from our midst and no longer appear.
With his satchel and staff on his old mission bound.
And we'll miss Doctor Stern from the streets of our town.
